Event Theme: Sankofa
The Question: Is recovering lost knowledge and practices practical for my life?
Sankofa is an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana and is part of the culture in many traditions across Africa. The literal translation of the word and the symbol is “fetch what is at risk of being left behind.”
The sankofa symbolizes the quest for knowledge with the implication that the quest is based on critical examination, and intelligent and patient investigation. Thus, the the past serves as a guide for planning the future. ~Carter G. Woodson Center, Berea College
